An Economy for the 99%: How to close the wealth divide and meet our human needs

In November, 2011 while the "Occupied" (by concentrated wealth) Super Committee was meeting on Capitol Hill, the "Liberated" Super Committee met on Freedom Plaza to discuss evidence-based solutions to the nation's economy that would raise necessary revenue, create jobs, end foreclosures and student debt, provide health and retirement security for everyone, reduce military spending and close the wealth divide. The result was the "99%'s Deficit Proposal."
Members of the panel will present these solutions and answer questions from the participants (audience) about ways that we can build an economy that works for everyone. Creating a democratized economy is fundamental to shifting the power base in this country away from concentrated wealth, the 1%, to the people, the 99%.
Panel members:
Gar Alperovitz - has had a distinguished career as a historian, political economist, activist, writer, and government official. He is currently the Lionel R. Bauman Professor of Political Economy at the University of Maryland and is a former Fellow of Kings College, Cambridge University; Harvard’s Institute of Politics; the Institute for Policy Studies; and a Guest Scholar at the Brookings Institution.
Margaret Flowers - is a pediatrician from Baltimore who served as congressional fellow for Physicians for a National Health Program and is on the board of Healthcare-Now. She is co-director of ItsOurEconomy.us and is an initial organizer of OccupyWashingtonDC.
Gareth Porter - is an independent investigative journalist and historian who writes about U.S. military and foreign policy issues. He contributes regularly to Inter Press Service, covering Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan since 2004. He has written longer investigative pieces in The Nation, Salon, Raw Story, and Truthout, Middle East Policy and American Prospect. has uncovered a series of major stories. Porter was Saigon Bureau Chief for Dispatch News Service in 1971 and later Co-Director of the Indochina Resource Center, a Washington, D.C.-based educational and anti-war lobbying organization. His latest book is Perils of Dominance: Imbalance of Power and the Road to War (U. of California Press, 1995)
Kevin Zeese - is a lawyer from Baltimore with more than 30 years of experience of writing, speaking and advocacy across a broad range of issues around peace, justice and democracy. He is the co-director of ItsOurEconomy.us, the director of ComeHomeAmerica.us, and on the steering committee of the Bradley Manning Support Network. He serves on the boards of Velvet Revolution and Common sense for Drug Policy. He is an initial organizer of OccupyWashingtonDC.
